When I Say I Am A Christian

When I say, "I am a Christian"

I'm not shouting, "I've been saved!"

I'm whispering, "I get lost!

That's why I chose this way".

When I say, "I am a Christian"

I don't speak with human pride

I'm confessing that I stumble--

Needing God to be my guide.

When I say, "I am a Christian"

I'm not trying to be strong

I'm professing that I'm weak

And pray for strength to carry on.

When I say, "I am a Christian"

I'm not bragging of success

I'm admitting that I've failed

That I've done things I regret.

When I say, "I am a Christian"

I don't think I know it all

I submit to my confusion

Asking humbly to be taught.

When I say, "I am a Christian"

I'm not claiming to be perfect

My flaws are all too visible

But God believes I'm worth it.

When I say, "I am a Christian"

I still feel the sting of pain

I have my share of heartache,

Which is why I seek God's name.

When I say, "I am a Christian"

I do not wish to judge

I have no authority...

I only know I'm loved.

My long journey to complete my Doctor of Ministry degree (I started taking classes way back in September 2001!) will finally come to a happy conclusion on May 24th.  After submitting my doctoral dissertation this past December, I received a letter near the end of February saying that the committee at San Francisco Theological Seminary had approved it "with minor changes."  This means that I will have to correct the typographical errors in it (How did those end up in there anyway?), and possibly make a few minor changes which my advisor and I will agree upon.  The final product ended up being 299 pages, just one page under the limit of 300.

So, mark your calendar for the afternoon of Saturday, May 24th, when everyone in the church will be invited over to my home for a graduation party!  Thanks for all your support and prayers over the years!
